BS EN 1090-1:2009+A1:2011 Execution of steel structures and aluminium structures/BS EN ISO3434 - wel

CE/UKCA/UKNI Marking of Structural Steel & Aluminium

What is CE/UKCA marking?

From  1st July 2014 it became mandatory for all steel and aluminium structures and their components to be CE marked. Post Brexit this has now expanded to cover CE/UKCA/UKNI marking. This includes those components where the fundamental properties of the  parent metal could have been altered eg. through bending, profiling, laser cutting, punching, shearing.... Also where the surface coating system has been started - shot blasting and painting.

How to apply a CE/UKCA mark?

To be legally authorised to affix a CE/UKCA mark to your structural steel product or paper work you must be certified to BS EN 1090-1 through an accredited Notified Body. This means you must implement and operate an approved Factory Production Control (FPC) system and ensure that your processes and products comply with the technical requirements specified within BS EN 1090-2 or the relevant part of BS EN 1090 series of standards.

Does having ISO9001 certification mean I don't need EN 1090?

Unfortunately not. Whilst their are similarities between the requirements,  EN1090 is more sector specific and works in hand with the welding quality management system ISO3834 standards where you manufacture welded products.

It is not just about welding!

Whilst a lot of emphasis is placed on the welding activities within EN1090, there is a key responsibility placed on manufacturers who process steel and aluminium using equipment which can change the properties of the parent material. This includes:-

  • Profiling,
  • Laser cutting
  • Shearing
  • Punching
  • Bending/pressing
  • Forging
  • Flame straightening
  • Shot blasting
  • Painting
  • ……..

Saw cutting to length is one of the few activities that does not require EN1090 certification when being sold in to the construction market.

MLP approach

The aim is to use what you already do and add only the extras you need to comply with the requirements of the standard.

MLP will write the essential Factory Production Control Manual (to meet the requirements of the EN1090 standard applicable to your business) and your Welding Quality Management System (to meet ISO3834).

We will guide your through the requirements for Responsible Welding Coordinators, weld procedures, welder codings, process capability testing and equipment controls.

We can help you implement the procedures with regular support visits and be on hand for any questions you may have along the way. We will liaise with your chosen Notified Body and can be on hand during your assessment visit if required.
